WEST YELLOWSTONE, MT — This may be the snowmobile capital of the world, but it’s also a budding, booming cross-country skiing mecca.
Before the snowmobiles get revved up for the season, the silent, snow-covered streets of West Yellowstone whisper with the sound of skis swish-swishing through town.
Two comprehensive studies measuring winter vehicle emissions in Yellowstone found Yellowstone Alpen Guides’ snowcoaches are the cleanest snowcoaches operating in the Park. The studies conducted in 2005 and 2006 by the University of Denver Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, Gary Bishop et al, January 2007, measured a broad range of real-time emissons during actual snowcoach travel between West Yellowstone and Old Faithful. These classic historic Bombardiers are not only the oldest vehicles operating in Yellowstone but also the cleanest.
Modern snow coaches are cleaner and quieter than even the cleanest snowmobiles, according to two draft studies released within the Yellowstone National Park administration this summer.
The results also show that snowmobiles continue to violate noise standards in the park, even though their numbers are fewer and use best available technologies to reduce noise.
